309 East Oklahoma Avenue

The Queen Anne house at 309 E. Oklahoma exhibits sawn wood details, bracketed window hoods, and the projecting bay window typical of this Queen Anne style. A large window on the first floor, with its small paned transom, is a precursor to the picture windows that became so popular in the mid-20th century. The craftsman style front porch, with its paired splayed wood posts on brick piers, while not original to the house, give the house the gracious, welcoming appearance typical of houses of this era.

This 4 bedroom, 3 bath house has a large entryway with long oak staircase. The house has been owned by only 3 families in the last 100 years, which explains the excellent condition of the woodwork. There are 6 fireplaces with beautifully carved mantles, all with the original tiles intact. The gardens are also being “renovated” and include antique roses, dogwoods, shrubs, and bulbs planted between 1900 and 1980 by the Million family.

The Million family bought and enlarged the house in the first decade of the century. The Burger family bought it in 1994 and modernized it. After purchasing it in 1996, the Wilcox family has collected house history scrapbooks and brought the gardens back to life after decades of neglect.
