This home called Columned Portals was constructed in a typical east Tennessee farm house style by the George Peters family in 1855. In 1885, celebrated Knoxville architect, George Barber remodeled it creating a revival form not at all typical of his usual style. Victorian and Neoclassical influences are evident in its projecting bay window and ionic capitals on round fluted columns respectively. The original Barber plans were also used in recent restoration of the two story, 3000 square foot structure. Double parlors (one now a library) and a formal dining room open from its central hallway. An oak staircase with a handsome newel post light ascends to upstairs bedrooms and a quaint bath with original 20's fixtures. The upstairs porch has period canvas flooring.
