Ice Cream Social volunteers, something to be thankful for

Maggie, the 5,500 lb. cow from Mayfield, attended the 9th Annual Ice Cream Social. Thank you Mayfield's for letting her attend and for providing some of the ice cream. Photo courtesy of Lauren Rider.

Thank you to The East Tennessee Foundation for grant money that helps Old North Knoxville host events such as the 9th Annual Ice Cream Social.

Thank you to Mayfield and to the City of Knoxville for their help, including Mayfield for helping us out at the last minute to secure some vanilla ice cream. Thank you to KUB (Knoxville Utilities Board) for providing free bottled water through their H20 To Go program and to the Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation for use of some of their equipment.

Thank you to Betsy Hooper for not only providing music, but also rounding up Michael Dodge, Lindsay Crawford, John Osborne, Audrey J. Little-Crawford, David Pickens, John McClure, and Kelvin Scott to perform. Thank you to all these musicians for volunteering their time, talent, and skills. Their music added a wonderful air to the event.

Thank you to David Watson of the East Tennessee Community Design Center and to Bill Cole of the City of Knoxville Traffic Engineering Department for taking time to explain the traffic calming plan and balloting to those who stopped by their table.

Thank you to David Whaley and Tomica Miller for their help in collecting together and bringing such items as the portable gazeboes, tables, chairs, decorations, and various other things, and for helping in the clean up. Thank you to Penny Baxter for finding many of these items and helping in securing them. Thank you to Pete Creel for the extra table and chairs. Though he couldn’t attend the Social, he still provided these items. Thank you to Dodi Payne for getting the ice cream and some ice, and to Dodi, Tomica, Chester Kilgore, and others for scooping ice cream. Thank you to Lauren Rider and Cathy Shuck for taking time to help decorate and set up, and Lauren Rider and Tim Sparer for helping clean up afterwards.

Thank you also to Bill Cole and Sean Bolen for helping secure street closure material. With the cow, the fire engine, and children at the Social, it was a good idea to block off a part of East Scott for a few hours. And thank you to the Knoxville Police Department for having officers at the Social to help out and answer questions about policing issues in Old North Knoxville.

Thank you to Beth Booker for getting the 15-foot tall Mayfield cow and the Knoxville Fire Department fire engine to participate, for the use of her yard, and for handling many details that are necessary toward making the Social a success.

And thank you to anybody whose name has not been mentioned. Nobody’s name is omitted on purpose, only that often not all the names of people who have helped in large and small ways were written down. While this event does not take as many people as the Annual Holiday Home Tour, as you can see, it does take neighbors to make a neighborhood event a success, and all help is appreciated. Thank you.
