Neighborhood cleanup Nov. 19th ONK will hold its fall neighborhood clean up Saturday, November 19th from 8:30 to noon. The City of Knoxville will place dumpsters at several sites in our neighborhood and haul away our unwanted items and street trash. Old North volunteers will remove litter and debris from streets and alleys. Please be respectful of the dumpsters. The dumpsters should not be filled over the top; they should not be used for construction materials or hazardous waste. Failure to comply with city rules will mean that ONK will be not be able to receive free dumpsters in the future. Volunteers should meet at 124 E. Scott at 8:30 a.m. Saturday November 19th. We will have gloves and bags for the effort. ONK will provide volunteers with lunch immediately after the project. Contact Beth Booker at 524-8515 if you can participate. ONK helps ETP-TV raise $9,000 For the 26th time in 25 years, residents of Old North Knoxville helped Public Television station ETP-TV raise $9,000 during its August fund drive. Since 1981, ONK has helped with at least one fundraiser. This year, ONK helped with two fund raisers. Those taking phone pledges included Tomica Miller, Janie Parker, Pete Creel, Sonja Anderson, Bob Lavoie, Chet Kilgore, Penny Baxter, Patrick Kennedy, and Andy Anderson, who has been involved with these fund raisers since 1981. Pancakes cook up $500 for ONK Applebee’s near the Knoxville Center was the place for Old North’s first pancake breakfast. Between 40 to 50 people showed up on Saturday morning, July 30th to get hot fresh flap jacks served up by ONK residents Tom and Donna Brechko, Sonja Anderson, Ernie Roberts, James Pierce, Sonny Jones, and Andy Anderson. Between $450 and $500 was raised the neighborhood organization. Thank you to all who bought tickets and to those who worked at the event, and thank you to Applebee’s for opening their restaurant and helping make the first-ever event a success. "...all we know of Heaven...." Dr. Robert “Bob” Gwynne and his wife, Rosalind, were among the first Pioneers in the 100 block of Eat Scott Ave., buying a condemned house that had been cut up and renting rooms by the hour and bringing this historic home back to life. Unfortunately on August 19th, Bob left us. A professor at UT and an avid jazz musician, he was also an accomplished photographer, who could often been seen walking around Old North with his wife, their dog, and his camera draped around his neck on the hunt for an interesting flower or scene to photograph. We would also like to note the passing of Andy Anderson’s brother, a veteran who passed away while in a veteran’s hospital near Chattanooga, and the sudden death of Sonja Anderson’s mother. Sonja is Andy’s daughter-in-law and has been active in Old North events such as the recent ETP-TV fundraising. In the words of the poet Emily Dickinson: “Parting is all we know of heaven, / And all we need of hell.” They will be missed. Return to newsletter table of contents
