The President's Corner
Tour time and traffic time

By: Tomica Miller

Yes, it is time to think about the upcoming holidays. Labor Day has passed, the "traditional" last holiday of summer. School has started. Football and falling leaves and less daylight are a part of ritual of seasonal change.

First Creek Cleanup

But it is also a time when things remain the same. There will be Halloween, then Thanksgiving, and after that Christmas. Before Halloween will be the fall First Creek Cleanup on Saturday, October 16th. Old North Knoxville has taken on the responsibility of working to keep clean the section of First Creek between Glenwood Ave. and Broadway. Volunteers are needed. Contact Beth Booker at 524-8515 or by to volunteer.

Victorian Holiday Home Tour

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas is Old North Knoxville's annual Victorian Holiday Home Tour, Saturday, Dec. 4th and Sunday, Dec. 5th. This is the 16th consecutive year of this event that usually draws over 1000 people to tour historic homes in Old North. This event requires many hours of work, not only by the home owners who graciously volunteer their homes and time, but also by many other volunteers, doing everything from being greeters in the homes, to manning the ticket booth, to riding on the trolleys telling the visitors about the homes and neighborhood of Old North Knoxville. To volunteer to help, contact this year's tour chair, Stephen Henderson at 659-5057 or by StephenDec1@aol.com. It's not too early to get into the Holiday Spirit.

TDOT Meeting

On September 9th, the Tennessee Department of Transportation held a meeting to discuss a feasibility study for a north and south interchanged where Hall of Fame Blvd. (5th Ave.) meets Broadway. There were some concerns expressed about the limited scope of the study (only a 1/4 mile radius from the proposed interchange site), the need for traffic calming devices in Old North to curb cut through traffic, and other issues should this interchange come to pass. A second meeting will be in about 45 days from this first one. It is important that you attend this next meeting. Plans for the possible interchange will be discussed. Look for notification and show up to express your opinion on this important issue.
