Porches "host" Night Out

The porch of Beth and David Booker was the site of one of the gathering spots for National Neighbors Night Out. This annual event is held throughout North America on the same night to promote crime prevention though getting to know your neighbors.

In past years, Old North Knoxville held its annual Ice Cream Social on National Neighbors Night Out, combining two events into one evening. However, this year, in part because the Night Out was also a city council night, Old North decided to move the Social to Wednesday, August 20th.

Instead on Tuesday evening, August 5th, Old North residents gathered on their porches to share food, fellowship, and even a sudden summer thunderstorm.

Lisa Sorensen, Scott Schimmel, Greg and Rena Webb hosted a cookout on Lisa and Scott's porch, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, and other cookout goodies to their 24 neighbors on East Oklahoma. Similarly, Kim Davis, Fred Sahms, and Ernie Roberts on Glenwood hosted 20 neighbors on their porches, offering them a meal. On the porch of Bill McGowan on East Scott was live music and a little further down East Scott was ice cream, lemon squares, and a few other deserts on the porch of Beth and David Booker. There were also visits by the Knoxville Police Department and candidates running for office. There's talk of doing this again next year, or maybe even sooner.
