The Excellence Award Says: The Knoxville Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission recognizes and honors Old North Knoxville, Inc. for creating a new standard of excellence for Neighborhood/Civic Achievement. This superior achievement has significantly enhanced our community's appearance, reputation, and well-being. August 21, 2003

Old North Knoxville, Inc., the neighborhood organization for Old North Knoxville, has been selected as one of the two winners in the 2003 Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC) Excellence Award in the Neighborhood/Civic Achievement Category.

This is the second time Old North Knoxville, Inc. has won the award. The first time was in 1994. In addition, a home in Old North Knoxville won an MPC Excellence Award in Residential Renovation in 1996.

Among the reasons cited for the award are: the Traffic Calming Study, directional signs to Old North Knoxville Historic District, neighborhood banners, assisting in First Creek Clean Ups and conducting neighborhood clean ups, the current updating of Old North Knoxville's historic district design guidelines, supporting historic preservation initiatives of the City Mayor's Office and other historic neighborhoods and organizations in Knoxville and surrounding communities, helping WETP-TV (the Public Television station) with its yearly telethon since 1981, participating in the Neighborhood Watch Program, and having two homes recently featured on HGTV's Restore America.

Additionally, the yearly Victorian Holiday Home Tour was mentioned as were the neighborhood committees, and the "state-of-the-art webpage" on which the updated historic district design guidelines are posted. Even the bimonthly newsletter, with an increased circulation of "over 600 households and businesses" was listed. Tomica Miller, president of Old North Knoxville, Inc., was pleased to receive the news and "congratulates all the finalists and winners." She also said the neighborhood organization is only as strong as its members, and she hopes this award inspires others to get involved. "We have many dedicated volunteers in Old North," Tomica said, "but there is always room at the table, and many more things we would like to do."

The 22nd Annual MPC Awards Banquet was held Thursday, August 21st at the Knoxville Convention Center. Tomica Miller attended and accepted the award. Old North Knoxville also recently received a proclamation from Mayor Ashe at the August 20th Ice Cream Social. (For details, see Ice Cream Social article in this issue. ) A suitable place to display both honors is being considered.
