Bagpipe music filled the air on August 20th as over 180 neighbors, office seekers, office holders, police and fire fighters, and guests gathered for the 7th Annual Ice Cream Social. This year's event was also a political mixer with candidates for city council, mayor, and city judge on hand to pass out literature and solicit support.

Festivities began at 6 p.m., with Betsy Hooper opening the event with her stirring bagpipe playing. Next, Mayor Victor Ashe addressed the crowd, presenting a proclamation to Old North declaring August 20th Old North Knoxville Day. The proclamation mentions the 25th anniversary of the neighborhood association, the 15th anniversary of the Victorian Holiday Home Tour (both in 2003), the two MPC Excellence Awards, and that the "neighborhood association is a supporter of historic preservation initiatives in and around Knoxville, including those of the Mayor's office and other historic neighborhoods and organizations."

ONK provided the ice cream and neighbors brought toppings to share. There was croquette and yard darts for the children. Before the social, the mayor, City Councilman Rob Frost, County Commissioners Billy Tindell and David Collins, and mayoral candidates Madeline Rogero and Bill Haslam were taken on a trolley tour of Old North where both successes and areas of concern were highlighted.

Old Time music was provided by Bill McGowan, Leslie Terry, and Jeffrey Gleeson ( l to r) as part of the activities.
