The weather was cooperative. The temperature dipped into the mid-80s and the humidity turned reasonable for the first time in a couple of weeks. On August 6th, about 45 residents of Old North Knoxville gathered on
Dave and Lynne Palmer's front yard to celebrate both National Neighbors' Night out and Old North Knoxville's annual Ice Cream Social.
Members of the Knoxville Police Department, political officials, a member of the press, and even a candidate for mayor stopped by to visit and have some ice cream.
Flavors ranged from Vanilla to Chocolate to Strawberry and were furnished by Old North Knoxville Neighborhood, Inc. Spoons, bowls, and napkins were also furnished. Each neighbor was asked to bring a topping to share and an appetite.
This year yard games were also furnished, including yard darts and crocket.
The festivities started at 6:30 p.m. and ran until dark and little beyond. Unfortunately, it was a city council meeting night, but
Councilman Larry Cox still managed to come by after council and regaled a few remaining Old North Knoxvillians with the story of once seeing a Gila Monster sunning itself out in front of KenJo. He wasn't sure how the Gila Monster got there or what happened to it. Fortunately, it wasn't still around to ask for ice cream.
