Ice Cream Social Draws Over 60 People

Everyone had a great time and lots of ice cream, including Knoxville's finest

By David Booker

Approximately 65 people, including the mayor, representatives form the Knoxville Police Department, a candidate for city council, and the media joined neighborhood residents at Old North Knoxville’s Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 7th. Old North Knoxville, Inc., provided Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry ice cream as well as spoons, bowls, and napkins, while those attending were asked to bring toppings to share. Toppings ranged from the simple to the ornate, from fruits to syrups to special homemade toppings. All made tasty accents to the ice cream.

For the first time, this annual neighborhood event was held in Dave and Lynne Palmer’s front yard on East Scott Ave. Neighborhood residents came by car and on foot, pushing young children in strollers and bringing blankets and chairs to sit on. The evening was warm and the sky, while starting a bit cloudy, cleared off, summer weather almost perfect for ice cream and socializing.

The Ice Cream Social was held in conjunction with National Night Out, an evening when neighborhoods across America are encouraged host events for their residents. Though the Social was scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., it went past the two-hours and was one of the largest gatherings for this annual event.

Thanks Lynne and Dave for hosting this year’s Ice Cream Social in your front yard. Would you like to host next year’s?
