NEW BOARD AND OFFICERS ELECTED
At the annual meeting of Old North Knoxville, Inc., held on October 28, 1999, elections were held for officers and board members. Elected for the 1999-2000 term of office were the following:
President: Dave Palmer
Vice-President: Andy Anderson
Secretary: Penny Baxter
Treasurer: Robert Chelimsky
Board members elected for the term ending in 2002 are Pete Creel, Kim Davis, Johnny Layne, Marvin Payne and Rick Walsh. We thank these neighbors for volunteering to serve and give a big round of applause to the retiring officers and directors, John Crisler retiring as Vice-President, Dodi Payne (retiring as secretary, she is still on the board to fill out the unexpired term of Andy Anderson), Ann Crisler, Mike Branam, Phebe Day and Faye Massey. While these folks may have retired from the board, we still expect to see a lot of them and turn to them for help when we need it. Thanks again for the fine job you all did!
HOME TOUR ON TRACK FOR HUGE SUCCESS
The annual Old North Knoxville Victorian Home tour is well on the way to being an even bigger success this year than in previous years. We already have commitments for 10 homes to be on the tour and ads for the calendar are selling briskly. Many thanks to Chester Kilgore and his neighbors on Leonard Place and Grainger for working so hard to get three homes in their area on the tour this year. Jesse Ursery is already hard at work on the calendar layout and Ernie Roberts is tackling the daunting job of getting sponsors and advertising. Charles Richmand and Raaeco Architects are again letting us use the office at 428 E. Scott for refreshments, and thanks to Robert Chelimsky, 195 Degrees will again be offering these refreshments for sale during the tour. New for this year is the addition of four banners placed around the neighborhood advertising the tour (thanks to Andy Anderson for getting them made up). All homes on tour will have luminaries lining their walkways on Saturday night thanks to Lynn Palmer. Light poles throughout the tour will be decorated with bows and garland thanks to chairperson Tomica Miller. As you can see, a lot of people are doing a lot of work to ensure the success of the tour. We need people to work in homes, in the ticket booth, on the buses and other areas. If you can help please call Dave Palmer at 673-8995 and we’ll match you up with the perfect job.
HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST
SPEAKING OF FOOTBALL…
Rick Walsh, great neighbor, erstwhile board member and Paulist Father, admits to a quandary this coming weekend. He says that while he will be rooting for UT, he will be praying for Notre Dame. I fear your prayers may be unanswered this week, Father Rick.
QUICKIE QUIZ
This year marks the 11th annual Old North Knoxville Victorian Holiday Home Tour. During these years, we have averaged 10 homes per year on tour. How many homes have been on the tour at least one time? Don’t count any home for more than one time on the tour. Call (673-8995), fax (637-4226) or email (cdpalmer1@mindspring.com) your guesses to me. The winner will get two tickets to this year’s tour. The answer will be in next month’s newsletter. Join in and help.
BOARD MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Beats there the heart of anyone in Old North Knoxville who does not know this month’s Board Member of the Month? Lest you forget, let me refresh your memory. David Vogel has lived in Old North Knoxville for five years. He has been on the board for four of those years and is on the bylaws committee and tour committee. When he is not sitting on his lovely purple porch swing keeping with what is going on in the neighborhood, David can be found at his day job as general manager of Community Television. I might add that David’s greatest saving grace, other than his brevity in all things, is Ingrid, his wonderful, beautiful brown Doberman. Did I mention David’s taste in colors? Suffice it to say that when the Paulist Fathers got their house painted, David was not allowed a voice in the color decision. Our neighborhood is much richer and a better place to live thanks to the presence of David Vogel.
NEW OLD NORTH KNOXVILLE RESIDENTS
Kim Davis and Fred Sahms are new residents, having moved from their home of 12 years in West Knoxville to ONK in June of 1999. They say that they are thoroughly enjoying their new neighborhood and learning about old-house repair and restoration. A belated but warm welcome to Old North Kim and Fred! P.S. They are already very active in the neighborhood.
QUICK NOTES
Andy Anderson has several pieces of good furniture for sale at bargain prices. Contact Andy for more details and prices.
Congratulations to Deb Gill on her marriage to Michael Rogers September 4, 1999. We wish you the best Deb. Most of us know Deb from Agape House and as a terrific supporter of the neighborhood.
Speaking of Agape House, congratulations to them on their 30th anniversary. As someone who lives next to them, I can testify to the fact that they are great neighbors. Here’s to another 30 years, Agape.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS
Other responsibilities being taken over by various ONK volunteers include the following:
Jane Parker is the official historian of Old North and keeps an extensive collection of items related to it.
Dodi Payne has agreed to be our social chair, a new position within the organization. It is a position which Dodi has held unofficially for several years and we look forward to even more events like the successful ice cream social.
Kim Davis has agreed to take over our website as webmaster from John Crisler, who is forced to relinquish it due to work pressures. John initially set up our web site and did a great job of it. Now Kim is stepping forward to take it to the next level. When last seen, Kim was huddled with Penny Baxter and Tomica Miller to see how the web site can be utilized for informing both within the organization and advertising the home tour.
We thank all of these ladies for tackling these tasks and look forward to reaping the benefits of their work.
