Cathy Shuck has traveled from Cleveland, OH, to Chicago, IL, for college, to San Francisco, CA, for 13 years, and now to Knoxville, TN, and specifically to an old house on W. Glenwood in Old North Knoxville. The mother of a young daughter, Sierra, Cathy has also recently taken on the responsibility of being one of Old North Knoxville's board members, serving on the Beautification and Welcoming committees and being chair of the Nominating Committee.
Cathy said what attracted her and her husband Tim Sparer to Old North Knoxville was they wanted to live within biking distance of downtown, in an interesting home, and with interesting neighbors. "ONK met all three requirements in spades," she said. "We love our house and we love our neighbors. It's a friendly, fun place to live. I really like all the events, from the ice cream social to all the various cleanups. I like being able to contribute to maintaining the things about the neighborhood that attracted us here."
Over the next five years, she would like to see ONK build upon those things that attracted her here, with more homes being improved and renovated, "and people becoming invested, both personally and financially, in the neighborhood. I'd also like to see the neighborhood association form more alliances with other organizations, such as Fourth and Gill and Oakwood-Lincoln Park to further increase our political muscle."
If there were more hours in a day, Cathy said she'd like to spend at least part of it being better at what she does now. "It seems like there's never enough time to spend with my daughter, to go to all the meetings, maintain and improve the house, weed the garden … and I'm way behind on the Welcoming Committee." If there was any time after that, she'd like to spend more time exploring all the parks and trails in East Tennessee.
