Welcoming Committee greets New Neighbors
Donna Brechko, chair of the Welcoming Committee, reported that the committee recently welcomed some people who recently moved in to Old North Knoxville. They are:
Chad A. Speerly and Heather Robinson on North 4th Ave., Lois Branch on Harvey St., and
Kristina Anne McLean and Marcus Phelps on W. Glenwood Ave. Marcus and Kristina were living in an apartment on Armstrong before moving into the house they are renovating. Lois has worked diligently to restore her house on Harvey, doing much of the work herself while still being a single parent. Welcome new neighbors. If you've recently moved into Old North Knoxville or know of somebody who did, please let us. There is a phone number and e-mail address on the front of the newsletter.
New Board Members fill open spots
Sean Bolen, Catherine Suddarth, and Robert Marlino have been elected to fill out the terms of several Old North Knoxville board members who retired from the board, or in the case of
Rena Webb and Susan Hamilton, both of whom are moving out of Old North Knoxville with their families. Rena was not only a board member, but also the first president of the Neighborhood Crime Watch. She was instrumental getting it going. Susan Hamilton served on the board, the Beautification Committee, and along with her family opened her home as part of the 2002 Holiday Home Tour. We wish them and their families well in the new homes. Maybe some day they will return. (We have had a few people do that. This place can get in your blood.) We also want to welcome the new ONK board members. All are fairly recent editions to the neighborhood.
Cathy Shuck passes bar exam
Congratulations to Cathy Shuck of W. Glenwood for recently passing the Tennessee bar exam. Last year, while pregnant, she and her husband,
Tim Sparer, moved here from San Francisco, CA. In September, she will begin working for
Justice E. Riley Anderson of the Tennessee Supreme Court. Until then, she says, "Sierra (her new daughter) and I are women of leisure enjoying the Southern summer."

For the March 27th creek cleanup, volunteers filled the dumpster at the end of Cottage Place. There was also a secondary pile on Hoitt Ave. Between the two sites, some 26 volunteers, including about 15 from Volunteer Rescue Ministry and Salvation Army, collected: 10 shopping carts (Unfortunately, there were 4 at the bottom of one area of the creek that we couldn't wedge free.), 8 tires, 35 bags of trash, 1 bucket seat from a car, 1 bicycle tire rim, 1 sleeping bag, 7 pieces of lumber, 9 pieces of pipe, 1 antique washing machine wash tub basin. (The type of machine where after the clothes are washed, you run them through two rollers to wring out the excess water.),1 corroded 50 or 55 gallon drum top, 1 "contaminated water" sign, 1 baby walker, 1 pair of inline skates, and one half of an "old-fashion" pair of roller skates.
We also came across a red-eye fish and a fairly large turtle. (I don't know the type, though I do have a photo of it.) Good signs, I guess, for some signs of life in the creek. The guys from the Ministry and Army worked like pack mules, pulling things out of the creek and gathering up trash. We would not have gotten nearly as much stuff out of the creek without their help. We also had two people from the Izaak Walton League. Thank you to Jake Hudson of the city and Americorp for providing gloves, ropes, hooks, bags, and other equipment.
For the April 17th neighborhood cleanup, Old North Knoxville had volunteers: Kathy Shuck and daughter Sierra, Andy and Joann Anderson, Catherine Suddarth, Tomica Miller, Sean Bolen. Beverly Wilcox and daughter Katharine, Pete Creel, Beth Booker and daughter Lauren, and David Booker. There were also several people who dropped off trash at
the dumpsters, but did not participate in the street cleanup.
Of the three dumpsters ONK received form the city, the volunteers completely filled two of them and partially filled the third one. The dumpsters were on Grainger Ave., corner of Folsom Ave. and W. Glenwood, and East Scott Ave. Approximately 30 bags of trash were collected, along with old rugs, discarded building material, old lumber, washers and dryers, chairs, a gas tank, children's toys, automatic garage door tracks, and a whole host of other waste.
Dumpsters are being requested for a future neighborhood cleanup.

Dumpsters are being requested for a neighborhood cleanup in the fall and for a
time between now and then when residents can throw in trash they have or find.
Thank you to all the
volunteers who gave of their time at both cleanups in order to make Old North
Knoxville a better neighborhood in which to live. And thank you to the
Beautification Committee and chair Beth Booker for organizing these cleanups.
