As Summer Begins, Things to be Thankful For

Spring moves into summer. Trees gain their full leaf bonnets, flowers spread their colorful pedals and toss their scents upon the breeze, and the grass, now in the full range of green, grows and grows, demanding weekly attention.

In Old North Knoxville (ONK), there are lots where houses once stood but unfortunately have been lost. However, the grass remains and must be tended to. Old North News would like to thank Chester Kilgore and Josef Coffee for taking care of two such lots on Grainger Ave., next door to the duplex at 1323. In 1983, these lots were so overgrown the city had to bushhog them. After that, Chester vowed not to let it happen again and even though he didn't own them, he undertook to make sure the lots were mowed regularly. Recently, Josef Coffee has taken over those duties. Thank you to both men for helping keep the neighborhood clean.

Speaking of keeping the neighborhood clean, we would like to thank a young resident of ONK, Jordan Webb, for organizing a recent neighborhood trash pick up. Seeing a need, he stepped forward to do something. He set a date, offered to provide trash bags and trash pick up to those who helped, and he gathered volunteers. Chester Kilgore put it best when he said he was thankful for "young people like Jordan Webb who get involved in keeping their neighborhood litter free.

Chester is also thankful for "Vance and Emily Thompson. They have completely rehabbed that house (at 1323 Grainger Ave.) from a triplex back into a duplex and rent to very nice young people. The place was trashed when Vance and Emily bought it, and they have done a superior job … returning it to a stable contributing part of the neighborhood. They do not live in the house, which makes them even more deserving of praise for keeping rental property in such a good condition."
