What do Osama Bin Laden and a garden in Old North Knoxville have in common? At first blush, you wouldn't think much. However, for Dr. Roz Gwynne of 131 E. Scott Ave. they are linked by two recent awards for public service, a forthcoming book, and research she is doing on bin Laden's mentor. In September 2002, she received a UT Public Service award. Then in April 2003, Dr. Gwynne was honored with a UT Citation for Extraordinary Community Service. Her article on how bin Laden interprets the Qur'an attracted a great deal of attention (including in Washington, D.C.) that required numerous responses to media questions and presentations to community groups. In part the citation reads: "While Dr. Gwynne is always generous with her time and expertise, her contributions during this past year have been truly extraordinary." An associate professor in religious studies at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Gwynne's book
Logic, Rhetoric, and Legal Reasoning in the Qur'an: God's Arguments will be published in February 2004 by RoutledgeCurzon.
