"May I Take Your Pledge?" ONK Helps Public TV for 23rd Year

By: Andy Anderson "WETP-TV, may I take your pledge?" These words were said many, many times by Old North Knoxville (ONK) volunteers at the recent Public Television fundraiser in March 2003. Tomica Miller, David Palmer, Chester Kilgore, Jane Parker, Dani Owenby, Bob Lavoie, Marcus Phelps, Kristina McLean, Sonja Anderson, Pete Creel, Rena and Greg Webb, and Andy Anderson answered phones and took pledges. Jordan Webb, Rena and Greg's son, helped operate some of the station's cameras. ONK helped raise about $3,000 during several hours on a Saturday evening. ONK has been helping with the telethon since the first one in 1981, when the fund raising drives where held in the studio located at UT in the basement of the Communications building. The first president of ONK, Marshall Thurman, a former East Scott Ave. resident, got the association involved. Since then, ONK has helped every year during the Spring drive. Stay tuned to the newsletter and website for more information as the time nears for the next drive. (Editor's Note: Old North News
