Hi Neighbor

Welcome to the Old North News! What you have in your hands is the newsletter of the Old North Knoxville neighborhood association. This issue marks a huge expansion of the newsletter. Where before it went out mainly to the folks living in the H-1 overlay part of the neighborhood, it is now going out to the entire Old North Knoxville neighborhood. That is the entire area bounded by Woodland, Broadway and Central as well as Grainger and Leonard Place across Broadway.

This expansion was conceived and encouraged by the Board of Directors of the Old North Knoxville Neighborhood Association in the hope that the more you know about your neighborhood the more you will join in and help us as well as take pride in living in and maintaining what we feel is the best neighborhood in the City of Knoxville! We are not asking you to commit to giving us money or spending all of your free time working for the neighborhood. We will ask that you attend some meetings and help out where you can. Also notice that we are a neighborhood organization, not a homeowners group. We recognize that many of our neighbors rent rather than own their homes. We feel very strongly that this is one of the things that makes our neighborhood such a great place to live. We encourage those of you who may not own the home you live in to join us also. Believe me there are issues that affect you also! How about the school situation here in Old North for just one? If you have a child or children who go to school you should be involved to make sure our neighborhood schools are the best they can be and the best way to do that is as a neighborhood group as well as an individual.

Our goal as a neighborhood group is to maintain and improve the way of life we are lucky enough to have here in Old North Knoxville. We do that in many ways. We recently installed signs and banners to help mark our neighborhood for visitors to Knoxville, we have a very active beautification committee which is working throughout the neighborhood to plant and maintain various trees and plants. There is a neighbors helping neighbors committee to help out in times of need. (see the article elsewhere in this issue.) we have a very active neighborhood watch program which has formed outstanding relationships with our beat police officers here in the neighborhood and, working with them, have been able to reduce the crimes that take place in the neighborhood. Your neighborhood is not afraid to go to the Mayor and City Council and let them know what we need and how we feel. As a result, Old North Knoxville is well known and respected by these officials. As a matter of fact our district councilman, Rob Frost will be contributing an article in an upcoming newsletter. We don’t leave the County Commissioners out either. David Collins is a frequent visitor to the neighborhood meetings. And lest you think we are a bunch of fuddy duddys, we have social activities that allow all of us to get together and just have fun. There will be a neighborhood potluck dinner next week and in August we have the neighborhood ice cream social. You are all invited. There is no requirement other than living in the neighborhood. So join us!

As you can see, we have an active involved neighborhood group that is dedicated to helping Old North Knoxville in any way they can. We hope you will strongly consider joining us and let us know what you would like to see happen here in the neighborhood. Our next meeting is Thursday June 27, at 7PM at 1411 Armstrong. We try to keep them short and informative. Please join us.
