ONK to Seek City Council Funds

As most of you are aware, ONK has been working on some banners to delineate the boundaries of our neighborhood.  Suzanne Shelton and her company have been hard at work on refining the design for the banners and we hope to have the final design ready soon.  Meanwhile, Tomica Miller has also been hard at work weaving through the labyrinth of the City offices and regulations to get approval to install them at several entrances to the neighborhood.

Initially, everything went well with the City's special events coordinator helping Tomica navigate the somewhat confusing rules that have to be followed.  Finally, Tomica got all the approvals needed EXCEPT she had to go to either KUB or Bell South to get permission to mount them on the respective poles.  No problem, we'll just make a few calls.  Well, turns out that there are extreme limitations as to what may be mounted on these poles.  So, we decided to look at the feasibility of installing our own poles that mimic the period street lights in the neighborhood and mount them in the right of ways between the sidewalks and streets.  We found a source for the poles and even as we write this, the request for permission to install them is wending its way through the city bureaucracy.  We have been assured that there will be no problem.  Right!

There is one problem, however, in that the addition of the poles will add significantly to the cost of this project.  To help us in the matter, we are lobbying our City Council members to designate some of their 202 funds on a matching basis to help offset the increased cost of this terrific addition to the neighborhood.  Thus far, the prospects look good that we will be able to get at least part of the funding we need.  We have already approached Larry Cox, Carlene Malone, and Jack Sharp in person and are in the process of developing a written request to be sent to the above council members, as well as the rest of the City Council.  Stay tuned here for the next installment of "As the city turns toward the edge of night".
