Old North Knoxville puts on a really good show in its December Holiday Home Tour. This first-timer has nothing but praise for the event, which was the 14th annual presentation of holiday-dressed homes in this ever interesting area of North Knoxville. I went to get a feel for the restored neighborhood, thinking of perhaps buying a home there some time in the future. I saw not only a varied selection of homes in differing stages of repair and restoration, but in addition was pleased to meet homeowners with fascinating stories of the adventure of it all. The holiday decorations were a bonus, and certainly added to the festive atmosphere.
I was impressed with how well-organized the event was. Everything to facilitate a smooth transition from home to home had been thought of ... from the gathering place in St. Mary's parking lot supplied with spacious buses and helpful attendants (and ONK T-shirts or sweatshirts for sale if one was so inclined) to the designated rest stop supplying hot cider and cookies, with buses running all the while to relieve walking fatigue at any time between homes. The guides were full of interesting information on the history of the area, were always watching for any needed help or questions, and lots of smiles and good wishes flowed amongst the visitors, along with snippets of fascinating information supplied by the homeowners telling their stories. I'm already looking forward to next year's tour, with its fresh offering of determinedly and lovingly restored dwellings. And, who knows, a house next door could end up being my next project ... and me a new neighbor in this area where neighbors seem valued and sought out, not only during holiday time but as part of the neighborhood way of life.
