The President's Column

By Tomica Miller (submitted under duress)
As the newly elected president of ONK, first I would like to thank everyone for your confidence in me and my ability to continue moving the neighborhood forward. Not to sound too much like a politician's speech, but I do promise to focus all efforts on the ONK mission statement. Second, I would like to personally thank Dave Palmer for his three years of dedicated service to the neighborhood as president. But not to worry, Dave will still be a board member and continue to be very involved. Look at what all has been accomplished under his direction: we've had very successful home tours that always show a profit, we installed the directional signs around town that direct visitors to ONK, we installed the banners that mark the neighborhood entrances, we stopped undesirable zoning, we built invaluable relationships with the mayor, city council, and other city officials, we formed a new neighborhood watch program and as part of our beautification efforts, we planted flowers & shrubs around the brick markers. I encourage each of you to thank Dave personally. I would also like to thank the academy... oh, sorry wrong venue. Anyway, I would also like to thank everyone who chaired or sat on the various committees. You can't have a hive without the worker bees! And while I'm thanking people, if I don't mention my better half, David Whaley, there will no longer be domestic bliss. Just so he knows he is my rock. The neighborhood is as strong as I have ever seen it. There are more people concerned and involved than ever. But, we still have goals to be achieved and problems to be addressed. To do that, we need everyone's help. Please come to your neighborhood's monthly meeting. It is always the last Thursday of the month at 1411 Armstrong Avenue at 7PM. We need your thoughts, concerns and ideas. ONK has several things on its agenda this year. Here are some of the things neighbors have voiced concerns about: traffic calming, schools, expanding the H-1 historic overlay protection, and crime. We are also looking into writing a book on the history of ONK. If any of these issues are of concern to you, or you have other concerns, please come to a meeting and lets work together to strive to see that ONK remains the best historic district in Knoxville.
