Happy New Year!

Here we go again.  A new year with new beginnings.  A new year means many things to many people.  In your neighborhood, the new year will bring new opportunities, new people and new challenges.  Along with these will be the constancy that so many of us enjoy and cherish.  Constancy and change are not necessarily incompatible.  Many of our homes have stood for over 100 years with little outward change while the interiors are totally different than they were in our grandparent's time (thank goodness, would you want to live without electricity or modern heat and air?).

This year brings Old North Knoxville a new president, Tomica Miller.  Now that we have someone in that position who is filled with enthusiasm and energy as well as having some great new ideas, watch out!  An added bonus is that Tomica is very literate, so you can now look forward to seeing a president's column in this newsletter.

Elsewhere in this neighborhood this coming year watch for and join us in working on some exciting new committees being formed to help make our neighborhood a better place to live.  We are fortunate in Old North Knoxville to have a great board and officers to lead us (click here to see the new slate for 2002).  When you see them on the street, take a minute to thank them for serving.

On a continuing basis your neighborhood always has room for more participants on a number of ongoing projects and committees.  Among them are the home tour committee.  This past year under chair Dani Owenby, we had a very successful tour and are looking forward to an even more successful one this year, but we always need help in preparing.  The neighborhood has a very strong and active beautification committee that is always eager to have new members.  This past year your neighbors got tired of crime and prostitution going on around us and with the help of the Knoxville Police Department, formed a Neighborhood Watch with Rena Webb as the dynamic leader.  Since then, there has been much progress and our neighborhood is recognized by the city and police officials as a very active group that is not to be ignored.  Rena has a column in this newsletter. Read it and join us in fighting this garbage in our neighborhood.  All of this is just a part of what is going on in your neighborhood.  Surprised?  Come to our monthly meetings and be a part of these exciting opportunities.  It is easy to sit back and enjoy the fruits of others' labor, but why not make a new year's resolution to be a part of it?
