Are You a Lion or Lamb in March?

By Dave Palmer

What are you doing on March 1st and March 10th?  I know, your great grandmother's third cousin's youngest sister's daughter is visiting, and you promised to have high tea with her at Junior's.  In the event that she is snowed in, and unable to leave Florida, there are some great opportunities to help your neighborhood and maybe feel good about yourself and your participation in the process.

On March 1, 2001, the Center for Neighborhood Development is holding an organizational meeting for the North Zone Advisory Council (ZAC) of which Old North is a part.  At this meeting, eight members of the advisory board will be chosen from the Old North, 4th and Gill and Parkridge neighborhoods.  This is part of the on-going Empowerment Zone grant which Knoxville sought and won several years ago.  The Advisory Board members will represent our views in Zone matters.  This is extremely important to our neighborhood and you since the programs recommended by the Advisory Board will have a direct effect on our neighborhood.

This meeting will be held on Thursday, March 1, at 6:30 PM at Fulton High School.  Please make every effort to attend.  Our neighborhood has an excellent reputation with both the CND and City for participation in evnents, so let's keep it up!  For more information, please contact Susan Smathers at 522-5935.  If you need transportation to the meeting please contact Dave Palmer at 673-8995.

The second opportunity to serve in March is on Saturday, March 10.  Old North Knoxville has again signed up to help with the KCOP public television station telethon.  If you have never done this before, this is a great year to start.  You will be on TV (answering phones), get free food, and the opportunity to meet local celebrities!  What else could you ask?!  Oh yes, it also helps our local public television provide great programming like Antiques Road Show, This Old House  and New Yankee Workshop (can you tell my favorite programs?  What are yours?)  Old North has committed to provide at least 12 people to man phones.  If you can help, contact Andy Anderson at 523-2005.  We will probably car-pool so if you need transportation we'll have it.  Any other excuses?
