Neighborhood Cleanup November 19th ONK will hold its fall neighborhood clean up Saturday, November 19th from 8:30 to noon. The City of Knoxville will place dumpsters at several sites in our neighborhood and haul away our unwanted items and street trash. Old North volunteers will remove litter and debris from streets and alleys. Please be respectful of the dumpsters. The dumpsters should not be filled over the top; they should not be used for construction materials or hazardous waste. Failure to comply with city rules will mean that ONK will be not be able to receive free dumpsters in the future. Volunteers should meet at 124 E. Scott at 8:30 a.m. Saturday November 19th. We will have gloves and bags for the effort. ONK will provide volunteers with lunch immediately after the project. Contact Beth Booker at 524-8515 or if you can participate. Volunteers Needed for Home Tour It may not be the toughest job you'll even love, but it will be a job you'll enjoy and remember. What job is that? Volunteering to help out with the 17th Annual Victorian Holiday Home Tour, December 3rd and 4th. If you can donate a few hours of your time to help preserve, promote, and protect one of Knoxville's premiere historic neighborhoods, contact Dani Owenby at or 633- 8629. Editor Needed for Old North News After 3-plus years as editor and about 3 years before that as a writer for Old
North News, David E. Booker is stepping down as editor. At present, the March/April 2006 issue will be his last. "It is time," he said, "to allow somebody else to take the newsletter to the next level." Traffic Calming (Note: this story updated for website 11-27-05) ONK has just finished balloting neighborhood residents to determine the level of interest in installing traffic calming measures. The final day to turn in the ballots was November 19th. After counting and reviewing the ballot responses, the unofficial word is that ONK has decidedly voted in favor of traffic calming. ONK is grateful for the help of the East Tennessee Community Design Center in mailing out the ballots and keeping track of the returned ballots. Also, we would like to thank ONK resident Tim Sparer for cracking the whip to get volunteers to go door to door to collect ballots, and leading the charge for the neighborhood. Stay tuned for the whole story which will be appearing shortly on this website.

ONK Board & Officers Elected At the October 27th neighborhood meeting of Old North Knoxville, some old faces were reelected to new three-year terms and some new faces were added to both the board and officers of the neighborhood association. The new board members are Patrick Kennedy, Bryant Ayers, and Amy Broyles. Reelected to the board are Andy Anderson, Pete Creel, Kim Davis, Marvin Payne, and Cathy Shuck. New officers include: Penny Baxter as president and James Pierce as 1st vice president. Reelected as officers are Andy Anderson as 2nd vice president, Cathy Shuck as secretary, and Tom Brechko as treasurer. Congratulations to all these people who have decided to volunteer some of their time, talent, and skills to help make Old North Knoxville a better place for us all to live. Survey Says... In a 2002 survey by the National Association of Home Builders and iVillage.com, 26 percent said they preferred a front porch and only 36 percent said they wanted to live in the suburbs. Add to that this piece of information from another survey: 60 percent of Americans poled said they enjoy going for a walk outside. So, if anyone ever asks you why should they want to live in a neighborhood near downtown like Old North Knoxville, just tell them to stroll down our sidewalks. Though it is late fall now, and the days are shorter, spring will be here before you realize it and you might just enjoy a pleasant afternoon on your historic front porch.
