The President's Corner
Safety First this Holiday Season

By: Tomica Miller

On the 1980s TV show Hill Street Blues, the watch sergeant always told his men and women, "Let's be careful out there." This Holiday Season we can keep our homes and cars safe by following these simple rules:

  1. Keep your home and car locked at all times. This includes windows and doors.
  2. Keep valuables out of sight. This includes not only presents, but your purse, CDs or tapes you regularly listen to, even loose change. If necessary, put things in the trunk of your car before going shopping or even inside your own home.
  3. If you are going to be away, ask at least one neighbor to keep an eye on your house. Also ask that neighbor to pick up your paper and mail.
  4. Leave at least one light on in your house. Maybe more.
  5. Leave an exterior light on. Light is one of the cheapest security measures you can use.
  6. If you see a street light that is out or not working properly (For example, flickering on and off.), call KUB at 524-2911. Get the number off the pole or write down the location of the street light.
  7. Keep an eye for anything suspicious. As the police say, if you think you see something suspicious, they probably will, too.
  8. If you see anything suspicious, call the police. Dial 215-4010 or 911. Give the police as much information as you can, a description of the person(s), a description of the car(s), license plate (s).
  9. Neatness counts. Pick up trash that has blown into your yard or on the street in front of your house. Picked up trash lets criminals know somebody is paying attention.
  10. Get involved with the neighborhood watch. Contact your block captain or call Neighborhood Watch president Catherine Suddarth at 546-0773.

Criminals look for easy prey. If we follow these simple rules, together we can keep them from having a happy holiday at our expense. Let's be careful in ONK.
