October Creek Cleanup a Success

Twelve shopping carts, 30 bags of trash, one manhole cover, one tire, and a News Sentinel newspaper dispenser were among the items tugged, pulled, carried, and roped out of First Creek on October 16th. Twenty-five members of Americorp and 5 residents of Old North Knoxville and 1 from Fourth and Gill worked for a few hours on a cool Saturday morning, focusing on the section of First Creek from Broadway to Grainger Avenue in this the 6th cleanup of the creek and First Creek Greenway.

The Americorp volunteers came from across the state of Tennessee. They were in town for a statewide conference, and as part of the conference, the several hundred members in attendance were divided among 9 creek cleanup sites.

The Knoxville branch of Americorp is the only one in the state to focus on creek cleanup and ONK was fortunate to get them to send some of their volunteers our way, otherwise much less work would have been accomplished by the small but dedicated local group. Thank you to Americorp for the volunteers who ranged from students to teachers, from youthful in body to youthful in spirit.

Thank you, too, to Robert Marlino, Catherine Suddarth, Jerry Rivers, Beth and David Booker from ONK, and to Chris from Fourth and Gill. The cleanups are having a positive effect on the First Creek Greenway. While there is still plenty of trash that shows up, there is also a reduction in some of the types of materials found. For example, only one tire was recovered this time.

In the past, 6 or more tires have been pulled out of the creek. With a shopping center on the other side of Broadway, just upstream from the greenway, there will probably always be shopping carts, but most of the ones pulled out this time looked like recent dumps into the creek and not ones that had been there to the point of rusting, which has been the case in the past. Another cleanup is planned for the spring.
