16th Victorian Holiday Home Tour

This George Barber home, known as Pinecrest, is one of the ten homes and one church on the Holiday Home Tour this December 4th, 4 - 9 p.m., and December 5th, 1 - 5 p.m.

Ten homes and one church are the focus of the 16th Annual Victorian Holiday Home Tour this December 4th and 5th. Everything from a Queen Anne Cottage recreated from the ground up to a 4,000 sq. ft. house designed by George Barber, a nationally known architect of the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be on display. Relatives of Barbers designed the Fourth Presbyterian Church, which has both impressive stained glass windows and an organ almost 60-years old. It is the only remaining George Kilgen Company organ in Knoxville.

Tour tickets go on sale in mid-November at area Kroger stores. Price for advanced tickets is $8 a piece. The days of the tour tickets can be purchased for $10 a piece at the St. Mary's Parking lot on Woodland Ave. You can park there and take the trolley to the homes and church, then ride back to your car. You can also walk from house to house, if you want.

This year there will be singing provided by the Fulton High School Choir, whose members will be dressed up in Victorian Era costumes, and music by ONK resident Jane Parker, who will be playing the organ at the church.

There will also be three door prizes drawn from the tickets turned in when you complete the tour. For more information, call 865-523-HONK (4665) or click here. The Saturday, December 4th tour starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m. The Sunday, December 5th tour starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 5 p.m.

This year's tour includes several houses that are being revitalized, brought back to their former glories by recent residents. Over the past decade, Old North Knoxville has seen a steady and strong resurgence as one home after another has been taken from the state of downtrodden and brought back to that special newness that only owning a refurbished old home can convey. Come see history being reborn.

6th Annual Decorating Contest

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in Holiday style
In the air there's a feeling of …

... the Victorian Holiday Home Tour decorating contest. The Home Tour Committee is asking you to help dress up Old North Knoxville in Holiday Style by decorating the exterior of your home. Deadline for doing so is Thursday, December 2nd. On Friday, December 3rd, three judges from outside the neighborhood will drive around the neighborhood, at least once before dark and at least once after dark. These judges will be deciding on the winners in two categories: traditional (Victorian-era) Christmas decorations and more modern decorations. There will be three winners in each category. Each winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Kroger.

The size of your house does not matter. The number of decorations is not as important as originality, creativity, and decorations that capture the spirit of the Holiday Season, both secular and religious. Decorate the outside of your house and think to yourself: If I were a judge, would I pick my house? Would my house capture the feeling of Christmas?

Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on ever street corner you hear
Silver bells, silver bells

It's Christmas time in Old North Knoxville.
