Tour Volunteerism

By Tomica Miller

In this edition of the Old North News, I want to talk about our upcoming home tour. This year will be our 14th Annual Victorian Holiday Home Tour and it promises to be better than ever. We have lots of surprises in store. I understand that Santa himself will give us a visit. We also have the carolers back this year. There is so much work that goes in to planning a successful tour. Many people do not realize that we work on the tour almost year-round. We really only take 1 month off from tour business, and that's to recuperate, then we get right back in there working towards the next years tour. We should all thank Dani Owenby for being our Tour Chair for the second year in a row, and for doing such a great job. Who could follow in her footsteps??? There are so many people who work on the tour throughout the year; it's hard to name all of them. Each person contributes a very important piece of the puzzle. Jesse Ursery does almost all of the layout of calendars, posters, flyers, tickets, brochures, and ads (if I left out anything, I'm sure Jesse does it!). These people sold ad spots and/or sponsor spots which pay for most of our tour expenses: Dani Owenby, Andy Anderson, Ernie Roberts, Pete Creel, David Booker and Chester Kilgore. Be sure to keep an eye on Channel 12. Dave Vogel helps us with a 15 minute interview in which you will see Dani interviewing long time neighbor Phoebe Day and new neighbors Scott Schimmel, Lisa Sorensen, and Victoria about our upcoming tour. Others we need to thank when we see them are Dave Palmer, Marvin & Dodi Payne, Lou Russell, Kim Davis, Jo Ann Anderson, Penny Baxter, Bob Lavoie, Tom & Donna Brechko, Ann Bennett, Jane Parker, and Charlie Richmond for handling anything and everything else.

I don't mean to bore anyone, but all of these people are responsible for making our neighborhood a better place to live. The funds we raise by showing off our wonderful neighborhood and beautiful houses enables us to give back to our community. We sponsor meals-on-wheels, we give to the Fulton Alumni Scholarship program, we give to Knox Heritage, we have an ice cream social and a potluck, we are able to send you this newsletter, plant flowers and trees, and are working on a major traffic calming plan for our entire neighborhood. So tell your friends, and don't miss the tour! Happy Holidays!
