Don't Forget to Decorate

By Dave Palmer
This year marks our 3rd annual Old North Knoxville neighborhood Christmas decorating contest.  Each year we ask that our neighbors have their outside Christmas decorations in place by the Friday prior to the annual Victorian Holiday Home Tour.  On that day, a group of judges from outside the neighborhood drives around and selects favorites.  Each of these winners is then awarded a $50 gift certificate from Kroger to help with their holiday dinner.

Your home tour committee this year decided to improve the decorating contest and acknowledge our Victorian roots.  To that end, we have added three $50 gift certificates to the three that we have traditionally given.  The judges this year will award three certificates for those homes having the best general decorations and additionally will give three certificates to those homes that display the best traditional decorations.  So if you decorate in the Victorian style without a bunch of lights, animation and yard animals, you will have an equal opportunity alongside the people who do have these delightful types of decorations.  We anticipate that this addition to the decorating contest will enhance the contest and spur even more neighbors to put their decorations up in time for the tour.

As I write this, it is in the low 70s with smoke from area brush fires making it hard to breathe, with no sign of cold weather ahead.  (Didn't they predict a "normal" winter for this part of the country?)  This makes it hard to get into the mood to put up storm windows, much less, Christmas decorations!  Even so, we know that the holiday season cannot be put off, so bite the bullet and get those decorations up!  The past three years have given us some great decorated homes for the contest and we look forward to this continuing and getting even better.  Don't forget the only rules are: (1) have your decorations up and lit by Friday, December 1, 2000.  The judging will take place around 5-7PM, and (2) there are no other rules.  There are no forms to fill out or fees to pay.  EVERY HOME in the area bounded by Woodland, Central, and Broadway, as well as Grainger, Leonard Place, Overton Place and the portion of Luttrell running from Leonard Place to Glenwood is entered by just putting up their holiday decorations in time.

We will report the results of this year's contest in the January/February newsletter.  I hope your name is one of those listed!
