Welcome Neighbors, Welcome Friends

New neighbors Abby Loeffler (above) and Chris Burris (below) introducing themselves at the March potluck.

On the first weekend in June the welcoming committee, which usually consists of Sonja Anderson, Margo Hughes, Lauren Rider, Donna Brechko, Dani Owenby, Nancy Hugh, Beth Booker and Cathy Schuck, made their long overdue rounds and did some catching up. Nancy and Donna kindly supplied us with brownies, which are definitely a favorite with our new neighbors. We rang bells or knocked on the doors of 18 new neighbors, and met a bunch of really interesting and friendly folks in a variety of age groups, with a variety of move-in dates as far back as the middle of last year. While I have to admit that by the end of the two days my throat was a little scratchy and my feet were tired, the welcoming business is so much fun I almost feel guilty for hogging all the new neighbors. It’s fascinating to talk to people from all different walks and stages in life. My favorite part of the conversations with various new neighbors is finding out what drew them to this particular neighborhood. Though the unique, well constructed old houses and location are added bonuses, the most common answer was “the community.” Many of the people welcomed this June have friends in the neighborhood and were so impressed with the friendly way of life we seem to have, that they just had to buy in. Of course the welcoming committee is a great confirmation that one of the ONK fringe benefits is friendly neighbors. Not to carry on about how much fun we had without all of you, we encourage anyone interested in the wonderful experience of welcoming new neighbors to contact Lauren Rider at for more information.
