Things Going On in ONK

August 1st is National Night Out

National Night Out (NNO), as the name indicates, is a national event. People all over the United States have been celebrating this tradition for years, marking this year the 23rd anniversary. Last year more than 34 million people from all 50 states got involved by planning events and turning on their porch lights and you should too. The purpose of NNO is to improve the safety of your block or neighborhood, by giving neighbors a chance to get to know each other better while having a fun time. When neighbors know and care about each other, they feel more comfortable reporting crime and suspicious behavior to police, which will make your block a safer place.

ONK neighbors go rafting August 26th

For a couple of years past Ernie Roberts has been putting together a rafting trip for ONK neighbors (tubing is also an option). This year being no exception Ernie invites anyone who is interested to join him on the Ocoee River in Pigeon Forge. If 15 or more neighbors participate there is a group discount. The general cost will be $30-40 for 5-6 hours on the lower Ocoee. For additional information on meeting place and time e-mail .

Neighborhood meeting and Potluck August 31st

Join us at Broadway Baptist Church on the corner of Broadway and Gill for a potluck dinner. Bring a dish to share and enjoy the company of your ONK neighbors. The neighborhood potlucks are a good opportunity for new neighbors to introduce themselves, meet other neighbors and get involved. In addition there will be a slightly shortened meeting to discuss current neighborhood issues after the sharing of food.

10th Annual Ice Cream Social  September 7th

On this 10th anniversary of the annual ice cream social we are not only celebrating ice cream and fellowship, but also the first ONK event ever to be held in our neighborhood park on Oklahoma Avenue. Several neighbors, David and Beth Booker in particular, have been working very hard on this park project and while it is still going to be a while before there are any structures or landscaping in the park we have come a long way. In the past the ice cream social has been an opportunity for neighbors to interact with each other, city and county mayors and a number of other local dignitaries. Though the elections will have passed by the time we gather, we still hope to see city council members join us for ice cream.

ONK will be providing several delicious flavors of ice cream; all you have to do is bring your favorite topping and some to share, gather all your neighbors and join us at the neighborhood park on the 400 block of Oklahoma between Harvey and Cornelia Streets. Hope to see you there.

18th Annual Historic ONK Victorian Holiday Home Tour December 2nd & 3rd

In the heat of the summer, the holiday home tour may be distant from your mind. Actually, it's just around the corner and the tour committee is really starting to cook up plans for this year's event. If you are interested in sharing your home, the committee is seeking homes for the selection process. Contact Lauren Rider ( ) to be considered. Additionally, the tour committee is seeking new committee members. The annual tour is a very important, prestigious event for ONK. The tour benefits several charities and funds neighborhood events like the ice cream social, as well as markets our neighborhood to potential new neighbors looking for a great neighborhood with great architecture and character. The Committee meets the 2nd Thursday of the month, 7:00pm. Contact Lauren Rider for location.

Other events to look forward to in October include a neighborhood wide Fall Yard Sale and a hike with neighbors. Details in the next issue of Old North News.

Please contact Old North News at for other events that should be listed.
