Second Annual ONK Gardentour

By Lauren Rider

Approximately 25 neighbors visited four home gardens on June 3rd. The tour offered a relaxing and enjoyable glimpse of beautiful flowers, plants, water features and an overall creativity within the neighborhood. These neighbors have successfully lent their talents to crafting beautiful landscapes that create a sense of retreat from the city, rivaling many estate gardens.

The first stop, the Symons residence on Grainger Avenue, was a visit to a private backyard oasis in the middle of the city. The Symons’ have dedicated four years of work and seventeen tons of rock to create a beautiful landscape with three waterfalls. Shrubs and trees surround pathways, creating a natural, woodsy retreat.

The tour's second stop took visitors across Grainger to the Russell/Ayers garden. Fencing, shrubs and flowers work together to create separation and privacy from several neighboring commercial properties. The star focal point of the garden is a three-tiered fountain, providing both visual and sound elements. Overall, the space is a relaxing greenscape for both homeowners and their pets to enjoy.

The third stop visited the Pierce's garden on Leonard Place. Two years of work have created a completely landscaped backyard, offering both flowers and vegetables, sun and shade. The garden featured strategically placed garden benches and cleverly placed stone creatures peaking from the side of stone paths.

The tour's final stop, the McBrearty home on Scott Avenue, offered a chance to relax and picnic overlooking a woodland garden. Several large shade trees provide shelter to moss, shrubs and a rocky creek water feature. A hand-made lattice fence shelters the street side of the yard, creating a feeling of escape to a wooded forest.

The Beautification Committee would like to thank the neighbors that generously opened their gardens for the tour.
