| "Some might say I'm back; others might say I never left. And still others might say both are true. A few months back, I did retire as president of Old North Knoxville (ONK) neighborhood association, but I did remain on the board. You can reach me at

I'm back as president. First, I want to thank Stephen Henderson for serving as president in my absence. It is not an easy position, usually requiring an average of 10 hours a week of volunteer work. Second, I want to say that I plan to retire again this October, and I am planning on it being more permanent, though I will remain on the board. Third, I want to thank Penny Baxter for taking the 1st vice president's position. She will be helping me between now and October.
Since I am "back," I thought I might tell you a little about myself as other board members have done in recent issues of Old North News. I was born in Austin, TX, about a year before the first manned moon landing. I went to high school in Salida, CO, and then came to Knoxville to go to the University of Tennessee. I have lived in ONK since 1998 and been a board member since 1999.
What attracted me to Old North was architecture, a true neighborhood feel, and involved neighbors. Over the years, I have served on all of ONK's committees, including Traffic Calming, Special Projects, Welcoming Committee, Beautification, Home Tour. I like being involved and making a difference that you can see every day.
Over the next five years, I would like to continue to follow ONK's mission statement to "Preserve, Promote and Protect" the neighborhood. To do those things will require continued involvement with the City Codes Department, the Police Department, City Council/Traffic Calming Committee, the Mayor's office, the Office of Special Events (Home Tour/Dogwood Arts Festival). I would also like to get more input from more people in the neighborhood. I know everyone in Old North wants our neighborhood to continue to be the best in Knoxville, but we need help! I would like to ask everyone in Old North, where would you like to see the neighborhood and neighborhood organization go in the next 5 years? Then I would take that feedback and work on those issues, ideas, and concerns.
And if I had more hours in the day, I would enjoy being able to work out and stay in shape (I love to run). I would also spend more time in the garden, cook and entertain, spend quality time with my better half, the infamous but elusive David Whaley, and spend more time with our friends.
