| On June 26, eight
residents of Old North Knoxville converged on the vacant lots on East Oklahoma
to clean up the site of what we are planning on being a small urban
park. Above is a photo of the lots before the first cleanup. Below
is a photo after that cleanup.

What once looked like a dry summer, has
at least for the month of June, turned into the fifth wettest month on record with 7.9 inches of rain. Considering that we have suffered through some drought seasons in the recent past, we might want to be thankful that we have caught up with average year-to-date rainfall.
In this issue we should also be thankful for Bob Lavoie, who took the time to trim the hedge in front of the stone legend on East Scott. Because of the markers position, it is not easy to see from the street. His work to trim down the hedge that grows on lower ground in front it makes this welcoming symbol to our neighborhood more visible.
Speaking of trimming and making things more visible, Old North News would like to thank all the Old North Knoxville volunteers who have given of their time and effort to mow the lots at 412 and 416 E. Oklahoma, the site of what we hope will be a small urban park. Those that have taken time to mow include:
Catherine Suddarth, Tomica Miller and David Whaley, Jerome
Gros, and David Booker for taking turns mowing. By cutting the grass, the lots looked much better than they had in years.
Recently, on Saturday, June 26th, 8 neighborhood volunteers gave of their time, tools, and talent in order to begin cleaning up the lots. Starting at 8:30 a.m.,
Catherine Suddarth, Scott Schimmel, Beverly Wilcox, Brian
Easley, Tim Sparer, Dan Schuh, and Beth and David Booker gave up a relaxing Saturday morning in order to clean off bottles, bricks, logs, limbs, stumps, pipe, and even poison ivy from the front half of both lots. Some of these volunteers could only stay for an hour, some even arrived a little later, but work went until noon and by that time there were 5 bags of trash and a large mound of limbs, logs, and brush piled at the back of the lots. Two residents who live near the future park,
Jim Claiborne and James Nahmod have even helped with some mowing and grass trimming. Russ Porter has recently offered to help mow. More work needs to be done, including at least one more cleanup of the back part of each of the lots. To volunteer to help July 31st, call 524-8515.
