May 27th Potluck had both food and information

Ice Cream Social set for 6:30 p.m., September 2nd

Rosalind Gwynne brought a green salad, "homegrown in Old North Knoxville," and a pasta salad, Pete Creel brought a corn casserole. Cathy Shuck brought glazed carrots and Marcus Phelps and Kristina Mclean brought Rise Krispy treats made over their makeshift stove as they restore their house on W. Glenwood. Catherine Suddarth brought a pineapple cheese casserole her daughter had suggested she make, and Beth Booker made a Southwest rice salad and a dessert. And though she couldn't attend, Dani Owenby sent a key lime pie for everybody to enjoy. These were a few of the items brought by close to fifty residents who gathered on May 27th at the Fourth Presbyterian Church for the Old North Knoxville (ONK) neighborhood potluck.

Old North Knoxville neighborhood association plans three potlucks and an Ice Cream Social for this year. The first potluck was in January. The Ice Cream Social will be September 2nd and the third potluck will be October 28th. The neighborhood association furnishes the meat, plates, and silverware and those attending furnish the rest. ONK president Tomica Miller hopes that with each potluck and ice cream social the number of residents attending increases. "It's a chance to get together, talk, enjoy each other's company and cooking," she said.

Robin Tipton of the City of Knoxville talks about sidewalk repair and replacement at the May potluck. She was one of two speakers at the neighborhood event. The next social gathering is Neighbors Night Out on August 3rd and then the annual Ice Cream Social on September 2nd.

At the potlucks ONK usually has a guest speaker to talk about an issue of interest to the neighborhood. At this gathering there were two: Robin Tipton of the City of Knoxville's Department of Operations, Engineering Division to discuss sidewalk repair, and Lloyd Norwood of the City's Codes Enforcement Department

Plans are underway for the Ice Cream Social. It will be held on the grounds of the Fourth Presbyterian Church at the corner of W. Glenwood and Broadway. This is a yearly outdoor event in which the neighborhood association provides the ice cream and those attending bring a topping to share. At last year's event there were over 150 adults and children and there was a fire engine and police car for the kids and adults who are kids at heart to explore. The Knoxville Police Department plans to have a Canine (K-9) unit at this year's event, and the Fire Department and the National Guard are being contacted to see if they can have vehicles and personnel on hand. As always, there will be ice cream and toppings, which could be anything from nuts to syrup to berries to even a topping or two made with a "special recipe." Hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social, staring at 6:30 p.m. on September 2nd.
