The President’s Corner

ONK's Dirty Little Secret

Editor's Note:  This month's President's column has been ghost written to allow our beloved president to thoroughly enjoy her well-deserved vacation without the worry of deadlines. We hope to see her return in the next newsletter.

There's a dirty little secret about Old North Knoxville. No, it's not about exactly where the boundaries of the neighborhood are, though that seems to be a secret to many. And no, it's not that Old North Knoxville often gets confused with Fourth and Gill, as in, "Oh, you live in the Fourth and Gill historic neighborhood." That confusion has led some of us to occasionally refer to Old North Knoxville as Knoxville's secret historic neighborhood. Of course, there are probably residents of other historic neighborhoods who feel the same way when somebody says, "Oh, you live in Old North Knoxville."

No, the dirty little secret I'm referring to today is the fact that many homes are bought and sold in Old North Knoxville without for sale signs ever being posted in their yards. Many, if not most, are for sale by owner, but sometimes they are sold by realtors. We certainly don't have any problem with realtors selling homes in Old North or for owners to sell their homes. In fact, we would like to help - and it won't cost you a dime.

On our web site www.oldnorthknoxville.org there is a page listing homes for sale in the neighborhood. If you are interested in buying a home or if you are selling a home, go to the web site and click on the Homes for Sale button. We will post homes in the neighborhood that are for sale by owner or by realtor. All we need is some information. For details, you can contact the web site manager at webmaster@oldnorthknoxville.org.

We are also compiling a list of homes (and lots) for sale in the neighborhood. In the past year or so we have seen an increase in the number of people looking for homes to buy in Old North Knoxville. (I guess the secret's getting out.) If you have a home for sale and want to add it to our list, call David Whaley or Tomica Miller at (865) 521-7884. That way, when families come asking about homes for sale in Old North Knoxville, David or Tomica will gladly tell them about your home and where the interested family can find it. And as I said, it won't cost you anything, other than a phone call or an e-mail or two and a little of your time. But ssshhhh, don't tell anybody else. It will be our little secret.

On a more personal but related note, for those of you who don't know it, Dave and Lynne Palmer are pulling up stakes. They're moving to Georgia. Our loss is Georgia's gain. Dave and Lynne have been instrumental in moving Old North Knoxville forward by preserving and promoting its past. Thank you Dave and Lynne. If anybody is interested in buying a home where a famous Hollywood producer and director once lived, let us know. It's recently had a new exterior paint job and the inside has been lovingly restored.
