Editors Note: Old North News is pleased to print the following article. Old North Knoxville is fortunate to enjoy a close relationship with the East District of the KPD and you will find either Lt. Hoskins or Sgt. Sheri Uzzle at most of our neighborhood meetings. We hope this article will add to your understanding of the KPD and the huge job it has to protect us and the rest of the citizens of Knoxville.

YOUR KNOXVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT is committed to community policing. We feel that this interaction between the department and the community is vital to our success. Partnerships formed to address and solve problems within the community will result in:
- Safer Neighborhoods and Parks
- Superior Police Protection
- Enhanced Quality of Life
Background information:
The City of Knoxville is an area of approximately 100 square miles, and serves a population of about 175,000 people. You may be surprised to know how busy the KPD really is. In the 1990's, a study ranked the number of calls for service answered by police agencies vs. the number of officers in the department. Listed as the busiest agency in the country is the Los Angeles Police Department. Number two on that list was the Knoxville Police Department. In 2001 alone, KPD officers citywide answered some 279,500 calls for service.
The area of the City of Knoxville is divided into three KPD Districts: Central, East, and West. The Historic Districts of Old North Knoxville and the 4th and Gill Neighborhood are within the East District. The East District office, located at Knoxville Center, serves an area of 37 square miles, and serves a population of about 61,000 people, which is about the same population of Tennessee cities like Kingsport, Bristol, or Johnson City. A good-sized police department in itself, the East District is comprised of some 80 police officers and supervisors. In 2001, East District is comprised of some 80 police officers and supervisors. In 2001, East District officers responded to about 87,000 calls for service dispatched thru the 911 Center, and several thousand other calls made directly through the East District offices. You can always call the office at 215-1201 if you have a need or a question. (Of course, in an emergency, always call 911!)
A sampling of crime statistics reveals that in 2001, East District officers investigated:
- 1745 Thefts
- 651 burglaries
- 461 motor vehicle thefts
- 221 robberies
- 408 aggravated assaults
- 37 rapes
- 6 murders
That is only crime reported in the East District.
As you can see, we can't possible do it alone. We need you to get involved. That is why I encourage you to attend your community group meetings, talk to the police offices that are there, and see what you can do. Together we can make a big difference in the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
