Marker Beautified

By: David Booker

If you haven't seen it, drive by and take a look. Thanks to the work of the Old North Knoxville Beautification Committee and a generous donation by AmSouth Bank, the brick marker at the intersection of Broadway and Central has been accented with flowers and other plants.

Fighting the hot sun and dry ground, members removed the grass, and then dug up the soil in a semicircle in front of the brick marker that houses the logo of the neighborhood, Lady Liberty standing at a portal. Next, flowers and low growing shrubs were selected and planted, and finally mulch applied around the plants. Plants selected include Verbena, Sedum, Coreopsis, and Juniper. Committee members are taking turns making sure the plants are watered.

Beautification members include Chairwoman Kim Davis, members Donna Brechco, Tomica Miller, Susan Hamilton, Lynne Palmer, and Beth Booker. Additional help has come from neighborhood residents Tom Brechko and Bob Lavoie. Thanks to all who contributed time, sweat, or money.

Committee member Beth Booker said the landscaping around the marker may not be much to look at right now, but by next year "watch out." By then, the plants will have established their root systems and there should be a wonderful blossoming of flowers.
