Don’t Like Ice Cream? Read On

Did you know that if you eat ice cream too fast it can give you a headache? Don’t believe me? Come to our 4th annual (yes it has been ’ event will take place on Tuesday August 7, from 6PM to 8PM at 121 East Scott Avenue. Please note the new location 121 East Scott Avenue

Old North Knoxville has, for several years, wanted to join with our brother and sister neighborhoods both here and around the nation in celebrating “National Night Out”, and this year we were able to coordinate our annual ice cream social with the Night Out activities. “National Night Out” is designed to :(1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. This program has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police–community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. By coincidence our normal spot is unavailable to use so it has been moved to one of the best spots in the neighborhood to accomplish the above goals, right next to the KenJo Market! (Besides, I want everybody to see my lawn and be jealous!)

As always, your neighborhood group, Old North Knoxville, is furnishing everything but toppings. Your admission to this event is a topping to share with your neighbors. If past years are any guide there are sure to be some unusual toppings as well as the traditional. A new twist this year is the addition of something called either Rice Dream or Soy Dream ice cream substitute. (So the excuse that you don’t like ice cream does not apply.) I am assured by those who profess to know that it is just as good as regular ice cream. You can bet that Pete Creel, Jack Sharpe and myself as confirmed ice creamaholics will not find out. But for those, like my wife, who are lactose intolerant it will offer an alternative.

Again this year the Mayor and City Council members, along with our county commissioners are being invited to join us. We also hope to have several representatives from the Knoxville Police Department and Fire Department. I suspect several candidates for the upcoming City Council election will be here as well. If you remember, we do not allow speeches, so this has always been a great opportunity to get one on one with our elected officials and get your views heard. All in all this looks to be our best ice cream social yet, so make a point of joining us on Tuesday, August 7, at 6PM at 121 East Scott Avenue.
