This and That
There are a lot of things going on in Knoxville that will have a tremendous effect on our neighborhood and our lifestyle. So many that at times I feel like we are aboard a runaway train with no engineer at the controls. I believe it is important to keep abreast of these events and communicate our thoughts on them to our elected officials. After all they do work for us, don't they? On August 10, 2000, the MPC will consider the Fort Sanders NC-1 designation during their meeting at the City-County Building. As you know, we in Old North are very interested in applying for NC-1 designation for the parts of our neighborhood not protected by the H-1 overlay, so what happens to Fort Sanders has a direct bearing on us. This MPC meeting will be the most unpredictable one in the whole process, so it is important to show solidarity with our neighbors in Fort Sanders. If you can, please attend.
If you haven't been out of town for the past few months, you have to have heard about the plan for redevelopment of our downtown area. There seems to be as many views on this proposal as there are people in the City of Knoxville. Some think it is the only way our downtown will ever become viable and active again, while others can only wonder how the miles of glass will ever be kept clean. (Click here to see what Dave is talking about! - webmaster) Still others think putting the convention hotel five blocks away from the convention will discourage conventions (particularly those with handicapped attendees). Then there is the question of who is going to pay for it. Think our taxes won't go up? How do you feel about the plan? Let me know. I will be happy to print your views here in the newsletter. I know, what good will that do? Well this newsletter does go to many of our elected officials and I have been told that a few actually read it. If you would rather go directly to the source, I have listed a few of the key players and how to reach them below. The important thing is to let them know what you think!
