Potluck, Spring and other things to be thankful for

Thank you to all those who brought food to the Feb. 24th potluck and ONK meeting. Thirty-five residents of Old North Knoxville gathered at the new meeting place for the first potluck of 2005. The theme of the potluck was chili, and some residents brought pots of their favorite homemade recipes. Others brought cornbread, bread, salads, and deserts, including cakes and "spiced" brownies. Thank you to Broadway Baptist Church at 815 N. Broadway for allowing us to meet there. This is the new monthly meeting place for ONK, including future potlucks. Come join us. Come thank them. Thank you to resident Tim Northcutt for proposing trying to save the concrete street guttering on Oklahoma as part of the recent scraping and repaving of the street. Thank you, also, to residents Chester Kilgore, Stephen Henderson, Tomica Miller and others, as well as Councilman Rob Frost in their efforts to make this happen. Unfortunately, even after e-mails, phone calls, and meeting with city engineering, it appears the gutters will once again be recovered with asphalt. City officials said it would cost too much to reuse them. Thank you to the East Tennessee Foundation for its generous grant to ONK, Inc., to help Old North Knoxville accomplish the goal of creating a small park on Oklahoma and publish this newsletter. And though we aren't sure exactly who to thank, maybe all those who have helped out over the last six creek cleanups, we are thankful to see a blue heron making a visit and maybe even its home along First Creek. Maybe the heron appreciates a cleaner creek. To help with the upcoming cleanup, see related article here. It takes money as well as volunteers to make ONK a better place to live. If you haven't already, you can still mail your membership check to Old North Knoxville, P.O. Box 3896, Knoxville, TN 37927. Dues are $10 a person, $15 for a family, and $50 for a business. If you already have, thank you. Your membership helps us help the neighborhood. |
