Happenings in and around Old North Knoxville

Children's playgroup meeting

It began as a small group. A couple of new mom's were talking about ways to get their children tired enough to nap. From there it grew and grew. Now 18 families with 22 children are a part of a neighborhood playgroup.

The 37917 playgroup meets from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month at St. James Episcopal Church at 1101 N. Broadway. On warm, sunny days play is outside on the playground. On cooler (or rainy) days, play is inside in St. James amply furnished nursery.

The playgroup is open to children under the age of five living in the 37917 zip code. A parent must stay with their child during group. If you'd like more information on the group e-mail Beth Booker at or call her at 524-8515. Alternately you can just drop in and play on any first or third Saturday.

Spring Fling April 8th - 11th

Do you have a chair that's seen far better days? A pile of broken kid's toys? A mound of leftover scrap wood from your last renovation project? Any or all of these are good fodder for Old North Knoxville's second annual Spring Fling.

From Friday, April 8th to Monday, April 11th the City of Knoxville will place dumpsters at four sites in the neighborhood. Look for dumpsters at Luttrell St. near Grainger, Baxter Ave. near the fire station, in the 100 block of East Scott Ave., and Folsom near W. Glenwood Ave.

Feel free to place your unwanted junk in these dumpsters. Toxic and hazardous materials such as Freon, old paint cans, motor oil, or the carcass of a dead animal are excluded, but almost anything else can be tossed into any of the dumpsters. The city will remove the stuff free of charge and your home, yard, and neighborhood will be ready for spring. If you're not quite ready to part with your goodies in April, watch the newsletter for dates for the Summer and Fall Fling events.

First Creek Cleanup April 16th

This spring's 1st Creek Cleanup will be Saturday April 16th from 8:30 a.m. - noon. Meet at the corner of Hoitt and Luttrell. This cleanup will involve fishing things out of the creek, cleaning up along the creek banks, and picking up trash along the 1st Creek Greenway path. ONK (Old North Knoxville) in conjunction with the Adopt-A-Stream and Americorp programs will provide gloves, waders, bags, and other materials needed to help improve one of the natural historic treasures of our neighborhood. KUB will be providing us with bottled water through their H20 to Go program.

There will be dumpsters to put the trash in and a wheelbarrow or two to help move the collected discarded treasures. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks. If you're worried about getting wet, you can volunteer to pick up trash and small items on the shoreline and park areas. And after the work is done, ONK will provide pizza and drinks as thank you for volunteering.

Adults, teenagers, and children can help. If you need childcare for your wee ones during the event, ONK volunteers and professional daycare staff will provide childcare in a private home nearby. Childcare space is limited and must be booked in advance. If you have any questions, or wish to book childcare space, e-mail Beth Booker at or call 524-8515.
