Vote FOR Traffic Calming

Above, traffic circles like this one in 4th and Gill are planned for ONK's traffic calming.

Dear neighbor, you may soon receive a ballot. It won't be for the upcoming school board or presidential elections. It won't ask you what your favorite toothpaste is or to vote for your favorite Survivor character.

The ballot will ask for your vote on a traffic calming plan for Old North Knoxville (ONK). Along with the ballot will come a cover letter and a map showing what traffic calming devices are being considered and where they are being considered. Please take a moment to review the information. Then follow the directions to cast your vote, place the ballot in the return envelope, and drop it in the mail. That's all you have to do.

The East Tennessee Community Design Center (ETCDC) is mailing out the ballots, will receive them back, and will tally the total. It is important that you fill in your ballot and return it. We need at least 50% of the ballots back. We also need a 2/3rds approval of the plan in order to take it the City of Knoxville and ask them to put the plan into their budget.

With Annalee Bohon as chair, residents of ONK developed this plan in conjunction with the ETCDC and the City of Knoxville Traffic Engineering Department. At public meetings, you offered your opinions and ideas. Input was also sought from city police, fire, and emergency departments. The plan was developed to minimize speeding and cut through traffic - problems we all face - without hindering the police, fire, or other important city services.

It is a perfect plan? No plan is. Will it address every issue in every part of ONK? Probably not. But it is a very good plan and one that can be added to later once these measures are put into place and we see what else needs to be done.

Therefore, we urge you to vote FOR the traffic calming plan. Help encourage good driving. Help make our neighborhood safer for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. Help make our neighborhood a good place to call home.
