Potluck draws about 40 neighbors to the first neighborhood meeting of 2004. With an array of food including ham, casserole dishes, vegetables, rice, and desserts ranging from ice cream to brownies to cakes, residents of Old North Knoxville started off the new year with a potluck. Old North Knoxville, Inc., sponsored the gathering before the January 29th monthly meeting and provided the ham, the plates and plastic wear, and the drinks. The close to forty neighbors who attended brought the rest, including friendship and good spirits to start off the new year in a new meeting place, the Fourth Presbyterian Church at the corner of Broadway and W. Glenwood Ave. Parents came with their children, single members of Old North were there, as were a few senior residents of the historic neighborhood. While the desserts were being enjoyed, the monthly meeting began, which included the welcoming of Sgt. Shauna Williams, a Knoxville Police Department beat officer new to the Central District. While she is new to the neighborhood, taking Sgt. Sherri Uzzle's place, she is not new to old homes, owning a 1915 Craftsman in the Morningside community. Old North is grateful to Beta Sigma Phi for the use of their sorority house on Armstrong. For several years ONK met there monthly. ONK hopes the new meeting place will allow it to better serve the neighborhood. Toward that end, plans are being considered for other social events, including another potluck supper. ONK walking tour April 19. As part of Smart Trips Week (April 17th - 24th), Old North Knoxville is sponsoring a walking tour at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 19th. Smart Trips Week is joint venture of the City of Knoxville and Knox County and is an annual week-long event to promote alternatives to "driving alone." Formerly know as Bus Walk Bike Week, there are several events planned to promote travel and enjoyment alternatives. Learn a little more about ONK while you get some exercise. Neighborhood-wide yard sale May 1st. Have something you think your neighbors might enjoy? Have the itch to sell, sell, sell? Well, on Saturday, May 1st you can combine both of those desires when ONK hosts a neighborhood-wide yard sale. The rules are simple: have your junk ... er ... treasures parked and marked out in front of your house. Old North Knoxville will do the rest with signs and some other advertising. This shindig starts at 8 a.m., so have your best future heirlooms ready to go. Cleanup nets 27 bags of trash. On Sunday, Feb. 22nd, 12 people from Old North Knoxville and AmeriCorp did a creek side cleanup along 1st Creek from Broadway to Grainger Ave. The volunteers did not get in the creek, but still collected an impressive 27 bags of trash, 2 tires, 2 shopping carts, 2 pieces of pipe, 1 piece of corrugated aluminum, 1 golf bag, 1 bike tire, 1 caution sign: "water in this area may be contaminated by temporary overflow of a sanitary sewer..," 5 pieces of dimensional lumber, 1 basketball, 4 pieces of foam, 1 bike (which some neighborhood kids asked for), and 1 compressor from an air conditioner. The people who helped out were: Catherine Suddarth, Robert and Kim Marlino, Tim Sparer, Jesse Yonkovich, Nancy Arazan, Lainie Ori, Beverly and Katharine Wilcox, Christy Morgan, Don Morgan, and Beth and David Booker. New residents Mary Marlino, Sierra Sparer, and Lauren Booker were also on hand taking in the sunshine of an unseasonably comfortable February Sunday. This preliminary cleanup was done in order to get a head start on the "Big Spring Fling" creek cleanup planned for Saturday, March 27th. Volunteers are needed. Unfortunately, there is plenty left to do. (See related article in this newsletter.) ONK helps WETP for 23rd year.
Since 1981, Old North Knoxville has had residents working part of the Spring pledge drive for the local Public-TV station. This year was no different. ONK had eleven people to answer phones and take pledges from 7 to 10:30 p.m. on March 13th.
Tomica Miller, Jane Parker, Sonja Anderson, Chester
Kilgore, Stephen Henderson, Ed Forshee, Bob Lavoie, Donna
Brechko, Pete Creel, Marvin Payne, and Andy Anderson helped
WETP raise almost $13,500. Andy, who has been heading up the effort for 12 of the 23 years, even baked and brought a cake. If you tuned in, you might have even seen a mischievous flower pestering Jane Parker. Let's hope the flower didn't get any cake.
