It's sometimes called spring cleaning and it's sometimes called Spring Sparkle. In Old North Knoxville (ONK), we plan to call it The Big Spring Fling and it will involve both a cleanup of 1st Creek and a cleanup of Old North Knoxville. All in time to prepare for an ONK walking tour planned for April 19th as part of the 2004 Smart Trips Week and in time for a neighborhood-wide yard sale planned for Saturday, May 1st. May 3rd - 9th is National Preservation Week, and cleaning up Old North Knoxville is part of preserving it. The 1st Creek Cleanup will be the first "fling" event. It will take place on Saturday, March 27th from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.. This cleanup will involve fishing things out of the creek, cleaning up along the creek banks, and picking up trash along the 1st Creek Greenway path. ONK in conjunction with the Adopt-A-Stream program will provide gloves, waders, bags, and other materials needed to help improve one of the natural historic treasures of our neighborhood. There will be a dumpster to put the trash in and a wheel barrow to help move the collected trash. And after the work is done, ONK will provide pizza and drinks as thank you for volunteering. Volunteers are always needed. So, show up Saturday morning at the horse shoe bend of 1st Creek, between the Glenwood and Grainger Avenue entrances to the greenway. Both Grainger and Glenwood run from Broadway to 6th Ave. You can walk down or drive to 6th Ave., look for the Cottage Pl. street sign and turn onto that short street that ends in a gravel parking area just in front of the horse shoe bend of the creek. If you have any questions, e-mail Beth Booker at kalrecop@bellsouth.net or call 524-8515. Adults, teenagers, and children can help. Neighborhood cleanup April 17. Unlike days of old, when residents dumped their trash in cisterns on their own properties, today we have too much trash and too little space to do that. Americans produce about 4.8 pounds of trash per person per day. Fortunately, we have a weekly trash pick up. Unfortunately, there are still too many people who think the streets and alleys and sidewalks are appropriate dumping grounds for their cigarette wrappers, cigarette butts, lottery tickets, corn dog wrappers, fast food containers, soda and beer bottles, and a multitude of other items. To help combat that problem and even to even help yourself, ONK is having a neighborhood Spring Fling cleanup on Saturday, April 17th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To help us out, the City of Knoxville will place dumpsters at several sites in our neighborhood. You bring your unwanted item(s) to one of the dumpsters, throw them in, and the city will haul them away. If you have some piece of unwanted furniture or an old rug you want rid of, this is the day to toss it into one of the dumpsters. Additionally, volunteers from ONK will patrol the streets and alleys removing litter and debris. Elderly and disabled neighbors needing help in removing unwanted items from their homes or properties can contact James Pierce at 546-0509 for assistance. James also welcomes calls from those who would like to volunteer their help on the day of the cleanup. ONK will provide volunteers with lunch after the project. If you can only come for part of the time on either or both days, that's fine. An hour or two from a few of you is better than no time from any of you.
