"DIY To the Rescue" turns hallway into gallery

Above, the hallway after DIY to the Rescue  came out and helped Vanessa and Maritza. Below is a photo of (left to right) Vanessa Gualy, host Amy Devers, Maritza Gualy, and host Karl Champley. The episode airs this April.

Sisters Vanesa and Maritza Gualy of Armstrong Avenue in Old North Knoxville are art lovers who wanted to turn their main hallway into a gallery. But the carpet was torn and stained and detracted from the art as you entered the home.

With the DIY to the Rescue (Do It Yourself) team of hosts Amy Devers and Karl Champley, Vanessa and Maritza got help removing the carpet and installing beautiful ceramic tile down the hallway, plus filling the hole in the bathroom at the end of the hall with glass block.

Then, the crew of about 30 people showed Vanessa and Maritza how to install elegant crown molding the "easy way" - using a miterless urethane molding system. The result was an elegant hallway that becomes a whole new room in itself and the art gallery of their dreams.

DIY to the Rescue was out at Gualy house on December 5th and then again on December 17th and 18th accomplishing this work. On the 17th and 18th, one week before Christmas, the DIY to the Rescue crew was at their house "until the wee hours of the night," Vanessa said.

Despite how glamorous it might look on camera, it is often long hours and tough work to make it look easy and polished. Just ask Sean Bolen on Oklahoma. He, too, had DIY out at his house for a similar filming schedule, but more on his project in the next issue of Old North News. For now, look on the DIY cable network this April for the episode called "Hallway Art Gallery." It airs April 22, 2004, 10:00 p.m.; April 23, 2004, 1:00 a.m.; April 23, 2004, 8:30 a.m.; April 24, 2004, 8:00 p.m.; April 24, 2004, 11:00 p.m.; April 25, 2004, 8:30 a.m. All times Eastern. Who knows, you might pick up a tip or two yourself, and maybe even see some artwork you like.
