The President's Corner

Hello, New Neighbors

By Tomica Miller

We live in some very exciting times! Here in Knoxville, there are so many things going on that sometimes it's hard to keep up with it all, especially in regards to preservation and downtown revitalization. It's been a long time coming, and we certainly have a long way to go, but nevertheless, things are finally happening! We have a new convention center, new and upcoming restaurants, a revamped Market Square, and lots of new residential. That, to me, is the best part. If you have residents, then you create demand, and all the other things will follow. And, the residential units are renting/selling very well from what I understand. More and more people are recognizing what a jewel we have in our downtown, and surrounding neighborhoods. Having said that, I wanted to welcome some folks who found, and moved into our own little gem of a historic district.

Historic Old North Knoxville would like to welcome Michael Kaplan, who is an architect, and has moved into 424 E. Scott Avenue. Ask him about his chair collection! Then there is Adam Weaver who just restored 712 E. Scott Avenue. He has renovated old houses for years, until he finally decided to do one of his own.

Our next new neighbors live at 1237 Armstrong. They are Lea and Vanessa Clark. Lea is in restaurant management and is an aspiring actor as well. Vanessa works for an ad agency.

Also on Armstrong, Rachelle Jacobs and Kelvin Scott recently purchased their Victorian at 1329 Armstrong Avenue. Rachelle is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at UT. Kelvin makes and repairs violins. They moved here from Chicago.

Moving here from California, are our new neighbors Tim Sparer and Cathy Shuck. They bought 209 W. Glenwood Avenue. Tim is a professor at UT, and Cathy is an attorney.

Last but not least, we would like to welcome James Pierce and Beth Needham. They recently purchased 122 Leonard Place. They are doing a lot of work on their place before they actually move in, but things are well under way. They came here from Memphis.

I've already seen a couple of these folks at The Home Depot! That's usually where you find us old house people! See you there, and welcome to all!
