As many
of the kids in this neighborhood are aware, to their dismay, there are a number
of teachers in the Old North Knoxville neighborhood. We are very pleased
to note that one of them was recently named as Knox County High School Teacher
of the year. Ernie Roberts, a math teacher at Bearden High School,
got the honor after submitting to an extensive and exhaustive examination.
This exam looked at not only his teaching skills and performance, it also looked
at his outside activities within the community and his extra-curricular
responsibilities at the school. I had the opportunity to take a look at
Ernie's resume and can easily see why he won. Not only is Ernie active
within our own ONK community, he is also involved in a huge number of other
groups in Knoxville, including the Opera, Public Television and many, many more
while still finding time to be the Key Club advisor at Bearden High.
Winning the District Teacher of the Year was only the beginning for Ernie.
From there, he was entered into the East Tennessee regions competition for
Teacher of the Year where he again was chosen over his peers. Now Ernie is
one of six secondary teachers in the entire state of Tennessee competing for the
state-wide honor! Congratulations and good luck, Ernie!
