Old
North Knoxville Neighborhood Park Brick Sale
Old
North Knoxville was developed as a streetcar suburb between the 1880s and
the 1940s. Most people walked to their houses from the street car stop,
which is one of the reasons ONK is such a wonderful walking neighborhood.
Old North Knoxville, Inc. was established
to preserve, promote, and protect the neighborhood. It was incorporated in
1978 as a public benefit organization, working to combat community
deterioration and secure decent, safe, sanitary housing and renewed
community facilities. ONK has ongoing committees involved in
beautification, historic preservation, "neighbors helping
neighbors," and a neighborhood watch. Many of these programs won
excellence awards from the Metropolitan Planning Commission and most
recently resulted in a bronze plaque to be displayed in the neighborhood
park.
In 1992 ONK was made a historic district.
Dozens of homes have been remodeled; in one case a house was even moved.
Many enthusiastic new families have joined other enthusiastic residents in
ONK which, as a result, is now considered one of the city's most popular
revitalized neighborhoods.
Lets Build a Park
Building a park, while rewarding, is no
small feat by any means. These obstacles, however, did not stop David and
Beth Booker from pouring their energy into building a park for ONK
children. Four years ago, when David observed children playing in the
streets of Old North, he saw a need to create a safe place, out of the
street, for them to play. This vision and David's persistence allowed us
to take land that was once overgrown and stagnant, and give it renewed
purpose, a better use, and new life.
In order to create this park, we need
everyone to pitch in. Of course, any kind of volunteer work is always
appreciated, but we also need money. That's why we are offering inscribed
bricks, to be placed in the park, for a donation of $50.
Bricks for the Future
A brick can say a million things… OK maybe
that’s not how the saying goes, but it is certainly true. Bricks are a great way to eternalize the memory of a special
person, the date of a special event, or even the significance of a special place. It’s
like a thank you card for the world to see; a message
that will never be forgotten. For only $50 per brick, ONK neighbors and friends have a very
special opportunity to support this wonderful project.
Inscribed bricks are not only an excellent gift
this holiday season, but also support a worthy project that will keep giving for
years to come.
