Trees Planted in Old North Knoxville

February 18, 2004

These ten red maples and redbuds were planted in February 2004 on Woodland Avenue, near McMillan Street.

Old North Knoxville has again received another tree gift from the the City, thanks to a request made last year by Larry Cox (former Old North Knoxville city council representative). He asked the city to plant ten trees on Woodland Avenue (right).  Another three trees have also been planted on Glenwood Avenue, to replace the trees that were vandalized last year.  The tree-planting is an annual occurrence under the direction of City Arborist  Jeff McCarter, and is performed to maintain Knoxville's tree canopy through the replacement of trees lost to development, disease, lightning and utility right-of-way.

Last year, at the request of the neighborhood, Jeff oversaw the planting of 28 trees on Glenwood, Scott, Oklahoma, Armstrong, and Anderson.  This valuable city service has helped Knoxville to maintain its "Tree City" status (an honor bestowed on Knoxville by the National Arbor Day Foundation) for the past twelve years!

Don't forget: trees are an important contributor to our quality of life through their beauty, reduction of air and noise pollution, energy-saving shade and cooling, attraction to birds and other wildlife, and enhancement of property values.  We at Old North Knoxville would like to thank the City for including us in their plans for improving Knoxville's urban forest.  If there are any locations that residents would like planted next year, please contact Kim Davis by email or at 974-1847.
