First Creek Greenway Cleanup

What: First Creek Greenway Cleanup

When: Saturday, June 8th, 9 AM until 12 noon.

Who: You, your family, friends and neighbors from Old North Knoxville (ONK), WBIR Channel 10, and the Izaak Walton League (IWL).

Why: Because the Greenway is a wonderful neighborhood resource with a rich history and it needs your help.

How: To get to the greenway parking area, drive north on Broadway to Cecil Ave. Turn right onto Cecil, then right at the next corner. Follow the road to the bottom of the hill and park along the street.

Join your neighbors on Saturday June 8th for a cleanup of our First Creek neighborhood greenway. Knoxville was founded along First Creek and for many years it supplied the water to a young struggling community. While other sources have long replaced it for us humans, every year there are muskrats and blue herons, fish and other forms of aquatic life that still rely upon it. Not many neighborhoods in or near a downtown can claim to have such an historic resource. ONK can and we can show our appreciation by helping clean it up.

Schedule of events:
At 9:00 AM bagels and juice will be served at the greenway parking area.
At 9:30 AM IWL will give an orientation on how to participate in the cleanup safely. After that, the cleanup will begin.

You need only bring yourself, your friends and family. IWL will provide gloves and bags for trash collection. KUB (Knoxville Utilities Board) will provide bottled water for thirsty workers. Dress comfortably, including sturdy shoes for working along the creeks rocky banks and waterway. Be prepared to get wet.

Cleanup will begin near the Kroger on Broadway and continue downstream to Glenwood Ave. Fast food containers are the most often found trash items, but you might get lucky and find a grocery cart, a hot water heater, or even a highway safety cone. A picture of the person who finds the most unusual item will appear in the next Old North Knox newsletter. Maybe even a picture of the unusual item will appear, too. Now, won't that be a fish story to tell your family and friends about? This is one time when "the big one" might be the proverbial shoe on the end of the fishing line. But it can't be your own.
